Patent-to-Paper Citations

Front-page and in-text citations from worldwide patents to scientific articles published since 1800. We burned 2 million CPU-hours so you don't have to.

Patent-Paper
Pairs

Patents often cite papers, but sometimes the patent is the paper. Dozens of scholars have used patent-paper pairs, but there is not yet an open, large-scale dataset. We built a self-plagiarism detector to find pairs across all industries.

Startup Patenting

Conventional wisdom holds that new ventures drive innovation. This is hard to verify because the patent data don't indicate which assignees are startups vs. older patents. Prior work has linked assignees to Compustat; we try to link the remaining 95% of assignees to OpenCorporates to retrieve their founding year.
